March Update
I can't believe we are in the last week of March. We have been super busy and students knowledge continues to grow as do many of their abilities.
In math, we are finishing up measurement using non-standard units - mass, capacity, length and height. Everyone measures accurately by using the same unit (and same sized) per object. (e.g. My pencil is 5 small bears long). Boys and girls have grasped the concept of starting exactly at the beginning of what is being measured and leaving no gaps between units, as well as, ensuring they have an accurate weight by making sure the scale is balanced. Many understand that the larger the unit the less they will need to measure an object.
Furthermore, students continue to build and solidify number sense and numeration concepts as well as mental math strategies. Ask your child to demonstrate their amazing mental adding skills using some these strategies:
-Doubles (e.g. 3 + 5 + 3 = "I know 3 + 3 is 6 and adding 5 is 7, 8, 9, 10, 11)
-Counting On ( 4 + 9 = "I put 9 in my head and count on 9-10, 11, 12, 13")
-Doubles plus one (6 + 7 = " I know 6 + 6 is 12 and 7 is one more than 6 so I add one more to 12 so 13)
-Doubles minus one (4 + 5 = "I know 5 + 5 is 10 and 4 is one less than 4 so one less than 10 is 9)
-Make 10 ( 5 + 4 + 5 = " I know 5 + 5 is 10 and 10 + 4 more is 14")
Religion is all about the season of Lent right now. Prayer table has been changed, there are many discussions on praying and almsgiving and how that prepares our hearts for the coming of Easter. Recognizing unloving choices (getting lost from Jesus and God) and asking forgiveness from God play an important part in our prayers and in the Bible texts we've been reading. Students also are being taught that we follow Jesus like he is the Good Shepherd because he loves us and cares for us. God never stops loving us, will look for us if we get lost, and rejoices when we are found (by asking forgiveness and trying to do better) after getting lost. ASk your child how the story of the Prodigal Son fits into this thinking.
When reading and writing, we continue to work on building a WWW bank so children can read and write more easily. Long vowel sounds were also explored with the Silent Ee rule and When 2 vowels go walking rule. Students are well aware of many strategies to decode when reading and are encouraged to read at home daily practising these strategies just as we practise them daily when reading our Morning Message, during Read-to-Self time, Buddy Reading, Guided Reading with Mrs. V.P. and Ms. Moore and Daily 5 (Raz Kids). Now, boys and girls are being asked to dig deeper into the understanding of the text read by having to answer comprehension questions that fall into many different categories like - recalling specific facts, making a connection, making predictions, making inferences - and then being able to support/give proof for their thinking. Soon you will be receiving a formal assessment on your child's ability to write descriptively. So keep an eye out for that. Beginning in April, students will be continuing to build their sentence writing abilities along with being able to recount events in order using transition words like First/Next/Then/Finally.
The focus in Science is energy. We have been taking an indepth look at the sun's role in energy for the Earth and us through videos, books, activities and experiments. As April starts, girls and boys will broaden their understanding of various types of energy and the roles these types of energy play in their own lives.
For the Arts, drama and dance have begun. Students explored movement through participating in the hoop dancing workshop earlier this term. Further experience with different types of movement with and without music continues. As well, girls and boys are experimenting with how to communicate a message/idea/story using just their body (e.g. an animal walk), using just their body combined with others in a group (e.g. tableaux), and their body with various types of voices.
I look forward to seeing some of you soon for the St. James STEAM night where our class will be focusing on using technology to create art.

More Trip Information
Here is some information provided from the Mill of Kintail to help with preparing your child for our day.
“Although indoor/heated space is available and used throughout the day, programs take place outdoors and students will need to come dressed appropriately for the weather. To ensure a comfortable and fun day, students should dress in layers and have warm winter boots, a jacket, snow pants, toque, mitts/gloves, and a scarf. Students may want to bring along an additional pair of socks and mitts/gloves to wear home at the end of the day.”
“The Mill of Kintail requests ‘litterless’ lunches for all our outdoor education programs. Bringing food in reusable containers is a great way to cut down on garbage and would be very much appreciated as we pay per bag for garbage collection. All students should bring a lunch and a refillable beverage container. There is no water fountain available but we do have a tap!”
As there is not a ton of space on the bus we ask that you try to send the smallest backpack possible. Or better yet, no backpack! All the students will need for the day is their lunch and perhaps an extra pair of mittens and socks.

Valentine's Day Information
On Valentine's Day we will be wearing pink, white, and red to celebrate friendships. If your child wishes to share cards with the class, PLEASE do not label the cards with student names. Simply have your child sign each card only. That will make for easy, efficient distribution in class. Finally, to follow the Healthy Food for Healthy Schools Act, 2008 , please do not send in any treats. Thank you for your support.
Mill of Kintail Trip Update
As of January 30, I have 4 students who have not yet returned their permission forms. I sent home another one for those families to fill in and send in asap. As well, there are 2 parents who have volunteered. It would be great to have a few more. Please check your schedules and let me know if you are able. Thank you!
App Called REMIND - Update
The Remind company sent out this message.
Despite the outpouring of support from educators, students, and parents—and despite Bell’s decision to keep communication accessible for classrooms and communities across Canada—Rogers has no plans to reverse the fee being imposed on Remind text messages on its network.
This forces us to end Remind text notifications for everyone with a Rogers wireless plan (including these subsidiaries) starting today, January 29, at 6pm PT. To keep getting your messages, anyone who has Rogers as their phone carrier will need to enable other notifications on Remind.
To avoid service disruptions, please ask your classes to download our free app and turn on push notifications; you can find full instructions in our Help Center, including options for people without smartphones.

Class Trip To Mill of Kintail
We can have many volunteers come with us on this full day trip. It is Tuesday, February 12. It is a day of activities outside that support both our science and our phys. ed/health curriculum. Please write a note in your child's communication book to let me know if you can come.
January Update - Newsletter
Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope that everyone had a restful and fun filled holiday break. It is great to be back in the classroom and get back into the swing of things. Students have settled back into routines very well. We are currently finalizing our field trip and more information will be coming out shortly so please stay tuned! Here is what we were up to for the month of December and the beginning of January.
In math we continued to explore graphing. The students have become very good at collecting data and then using that data to create their concrete and pictographs. I hope you have seen some of their work on Seesaw and I've sent home a formal checklist assessment for your records. Our big focus last month was on money. The students have learned to identify the different coins by name and value. Along with that they are also learning how to represent various amounts of money using a variety of different coins (cents only, no dollar amounts) and in different ways. Our Secret Santa exchange was a big hit! The students did a great job earning money and then spending it on their Secret Santa. It was a lot of fun and allowed the students one more opportunity to practise the monthly virtue of joy through giving. I sent home a formal assessment for where your child is at this time with his/her money skills. In January, we continue to practise making various money amounts and are also directing our focus to geometry - 2D shapes and then 3D.
In our language blocks we continued to work on sentence writing. The students have been working hard to self-evaluate their sentences and are using feedback from me to improve their writing each time. Our letters to Santa were great and everyone was so excited when he wrote us back! We are now adding on to sentence writing to include a focus of descriptive writing. Ask your child what the difference is between a noun and an adjective.
As report card time is drawing near I will be doing another reading assessment with each student. I sent home 2 different check-ins for WWW knowledge. The first week back, there were no new WWW as we got back into the swing of things. This week we've added on. Please continue to read at home and practice word wall words. This goes a long way to students becoming lifelong readers.
In science, we completed our dioramas depicting what winter looks like. The students did a great job and showed strong cooperation while working with their partners. When we came back after the break, we took a look at spring and students did two activities. The first was to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of what happens in each season and the second activity, students applied this knowledge to determine appropriate clothing for each season.
In religion, we focused our time on the Season of Advent. The students learned about the Jesse Tree and we heard many bible stories about the people who came before Jesus. We discussed the birth of Christ and how the season of advent is a time for waiting. Right after the holidays, we continued the story of Jesus’ birth including many discussions revolving around the Three Wise Men and the Holy Family. The rest of January will be a focus on all families for Religion and Family Life. Stay tuned for a fun little project that will need some home support.
Music is a subject that happens daily. During the Christmas season, students explored music terms such as beat, rhythm, and pitch as well as forte (loud), fortisimo (very loud), piano (soft) and pianisimo (very soft). They used many different percussion instruments (tambourines, triangles, drums, and bells) and performed music by keeping the beat, playing the rhythm using colour coded notes.

Forest School Tomorrow - December 5
Christmas Play - Practice and Costume
The play is just next week and we need to practise the Welcome Christmas song. We will be practising in class but it would be helpful if practise happened at home too. Here is a link to get your child to practise the correct version (There is a long musical intro). Thanks for the support! Don't forget to work on a costume for Monday, December 10.
Sledding tomorrow (Fri. Nov. 30) so bring your helmets
Sledding Note for Permission & Helmets
A note was sent home on Wednesday for permission to use crazy carpets on the hills of St. James. Please let us know if your child needs to wear a helmet or not. Fill it in and return it the next day please, so we can go sledding on Friday!
Secret Santa Project
We've been focusing on cooperation, kindness, and thinking of others first. As we read many books and had some pretty thoughtful discussions, boys and girls wanted to do something for others. We are starting with the Secret Santa project. Every student is asked to go through their toys and find 1-3 toys that another Gr.1 would enjoy (in good condition, no pieces missing, etc.) to donate to our classroom "toy store" (set up and run by kids - experiential math). Next week and the week after, boys and girls will be earning "class money" to use towards shopping at the class "toy store" for a secret friend in Ms. Goreman's class. All extra toys will be used for a Secret Santa to students in another school in our board where families aren't as fortunate as ours. Please don't go out and buy new toys. Thank you for your help.
Forest School/Outdoor Learning
Looking for a volunteer for this week - November 28. Please let me know in your child's communication book if you are able to make it.
Reading/Writing Support
Please take the time to practise WWW daily. This allows your child to be confident and successful here at school if they know the WWW's studied to date. Keeping a running list in a visible area (on a magnetic whiteboard on the fridge, on a bathroom mirror using a dry erase marker, on a bedroom window using a dry erase marker, etc.) where your child can see it, read it and practise writing it every day will give them that extra boost that can only help your child.
Forest School/Outdoor Learning
Students are really enjoying learning outdoors in the forest. Last week was a great success even with the colder weather. Please ensure your child brings extra mitts on Wednesdays so they have fresh, dry ones for our hour and a half outside. Also, make sure they are substantial mitts/gloves - not the stretchy, knit type mitts as hands get wet and fingers get cold quickly in them.
We've been very lucky so far with volunteers. We do need a volunteer for this Wednesday. Check your schedule 2:00-3:30. Thanks!

November Newsletter with October Recap
October went by very quickly, probably because we were so busy! It has been a fun month full of different activities and of course capping off the month with a fun week of Halloween. Here is what we were up to.
In math, our focus was on patterning. The students explored patterns within our BUILD centers. They worked on identifying the attribute, pattern core and pattern rule and practiced using these terms when discussing the patterns they have found and created. We continued to do math talks focusing on numeracy, including ways to make 5 and 10 using frames. During Calendar, days of the week, months, being able to determine the date for yesterday, today and tomorrow were practised. At this time, most students are able to name the days and months in order and can determine the date using a calendar. In November, we are focusing on sorting and graphing, as well as counting by 5's and 10's (e.g. tally marks).
Our language blocks continue to include the Daily 5. Within these activity they practised the word wall words, reading (using Raz kids - read-to-me and record my own reading), journal writing and retelling stories. The students were using words “First, Then, Next, Finally” when working on their retelling skills. In journal writing, we worked on writing lists. This activity allowed the students to explore success criteria in regards to their writing and learning to set goals for the next time. The students have been doing an amazing job with their read-to-self time. Students are applying reading strategies taught so far - EAGLE EYE: look at the picture; LIPS THE FISH: look at the first letter and get your lips ready (I haven't named this one yet); STRETCHY SNAKE: stretch the word out for all the sounds; LOOK for WWW's. The goal for November reading is to go for 15 minutes daily.
In science, we continued our exploration of the seasons with a focus on fall. We explored the animals in the fall and all the different ways they prepare for winter. Students were true scientists as they asked "Why" questions and made observations to discover the purpose/reasons for the changes and how they occur. In November, we will continue this line of inquiry and students will show their understanding in a final project involving clay and shoe boxes. Finally, the idea that the sun is the source of energy for all living things and drives the changes in the seasons will continue to be discussed.
Health has allowed us to explore healthy habits of handwashing to help prevent the spread of germs during the cold and flu season. Physical education has focused on throwing various objects (with and without equipment e.g. balls and scoops, volleyball, pepsi balls) and working on our aim to throw and our hand-eye coordination to catch.
In Visual Art we created many pieces of work to investigate the use of various lines as well as contrasting colours to make specific parts pop. We used the fall leaves and their changing colours to help inspire us when using pastels, paint, and markers. They enjoyed it so much, it became the driving force for our Halloween door decorating contest.
Music was inspired by our patterning in math and we learned and created rhythm patterns using our bodies.
Finally, in Religion, students learned about the creation story in Genesis and discussed the various things we are thankful for.

Outdoor Learning - October 31
Looks like no outdoor learning this week Wednesday as we do not have a parent volunteer. Please check your work schedules from now until Christmas and see if you can volunteer any Wednesday between now and then. Thank you!
Halloween Week - October 29-November 2
Oct. 31 - dress in orange and black (no costumes)
-second block is our time for the fundraiser dance-a-thon
-Forest School happens in the afternoon (if we can get a volunteer)
Nov. 2 - cooking anyone? I need some parent volunteers for Friday morning (9:45-11:45ish) to celebrate fall with some pumpkin recipes. No experience necessary. Send a note in asap if you can come.

Outdoor Learning - Wed. Oct. 24
We have 2 wonderful parents coming this week (October 24) with us. We need someone for next week. Check your schedule and let me know if you can come with us October 31.
Outdoor Learning Update
Due to scheduling conflicts, it will be every Wednesday from 2:00-3:30. We need a wonderful parent volunteer that can come with us each week. If you end up having time to come on a Wednesday, the more parents the merrier (please make sure you do have your police check done). Also, please ensure your child dresses appropriately for any weather and temperature possible for that day.
Outdoor Learning
We have great access to nature here at St. James and I would love to take full advantage of it once a week - Wednesdays from 2:00-3:30. To make this happen, I need at least one parent volunteer that could commit to coming every Thursday. We would go in most weather (not in a downpour or thunder/lightning) and would walk to the forest behind Eva James Center. What a super opportunity for your children to do their academic and social-emotional learning in the great outdoors!!! Please, help us out. Let me know through your child's communication book if you are able to commit. Thank you!

For my classroom parents, please join my link to REMIND:
This is a way of sharing due dates and events this year that pertain to MY classroom!
